TRAGEDY struck at Chikurubi Damview on Sunday when two former inmates clashed over fishing nets, resulting in the death Tanyaradzwa Innocent Muzari.
He was 27.
Muzari had been fishing with 46-year-old Stanley Dhlamini Tutani, his former neighbour and friend from Chamboko Farm in Gletwin.
The two had bonded during their time together at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, where they became involved in fish mongering at the ZPCS Damview upon completing their sentences.
However, their friendship soured after a misunderstanding approximately two weeks prior to the fatal encounter.
At around 3 am on Sunday, as they engaged in illicit fishing at the guarded dam, tensions flared.
In a heated exchange, Muzari confronted Tutani, accusing him of stealing his fishing nets.
The argument escalated into a physical confrontation.
“In the midst of the struggle, the accused attempted to drag the deceased towards the deep end of the water,” said Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza.
“Despite attempts from an informant to intervene, the situation worsened.”
The informant, witnessing the escalating violence, carried Muzari for about 15 meters in an effort to seek help. Upon returning, he discovered Muzari unresponsive.
Both men had a troubled past.
Tanyaradzwa served eight years for rape, while Stanley was previously incarcerated for poaching.
