ZANU-PF secretary for Foreign Affairs Cde Simbarashe Mumbengegwi yesterday said the party was geared to host a successful 10th Former Liberation Movements (FLMs) of Southern Africa meeting.
The meeting kicks off here today, with Zanu-PF secretary for Administration Dr Obert Mpofu expected to deliver a keynote address. Cde Mumbengegwi told journalists yesterday that 200 delegates were expected to grace the event.
“It has been a great honour to host this very important meeting of the secretaries-general of the former liberation movements, which is being held under the theme, ‘Uniting former liberation movements against neo-colonialism through total economic cooperation, development and independence,” he said.
The secretaries-general, together with their wings, the women, youths and elders or war veterans, will share and compare notes on various issues of common interest.
Cde Mumbengegwi said all FLMs are under pressure from neo-colonialists, who are bent on destabilising peace to take up the abundant resources that they once grabbed during colonialism.
“This time, they hope they will be able to do it, but that will not happen. This is why FLMs members and the Patriotic Front of Zambia and the Botswana Democratic Party are coming together. The Patriotic Front of Zambia and the Botswana Democratic Party are attending the meeting as observers. This clearly shows that we are working to galvanise and make the objective of the liberation struggle succeed,” he said.
Cde Mumbengegwi said the meeting of secretaries-general and their wings is a preparatory meeting that comes ahead of the leaders’ engagement. First secretaries of the FLMs are expected to meet to consider recommendations that will be discussed at the meeting.
Some of the key issues up for discussion include the formation of the FLMs secretariat and the regional parties’ school on political education, which is being set up in Tanzania through the assistance of the Chinese Communist Party. Cde Mumbengegwi said the question of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the European Union and the United States of America that was deliberated on at the SADC Summit in Tanzania, will also be discussed extensively.
“On 25 October the entire SADC region will voice against sanctions. Various activities will be undertaken to make sure we are united on the call of removal of sanctions,” he added
Delegates will also pay tribute to former President Robert Mugabe, who played a key role in the emancipation of Africans from the yoke of colonial masters.
ZANU-PF secretary for War Veterans Cde Douglas Mahiya said the gathering was designed to ensure the people’s power was united against the yesteryear enemy.
