WE are now in the exam season. Exams are around the corner and this is the time for students to move from casual preparation to serious, focused revision. Success in examinations is not achieved by chance, it is the result of consistent preparation, discipline and hard work.
1. Create and follow a realistic study timetable
Students should develop a practical study timetable and follow it consistently. Allocate sufficient time to every subject, paying particular attention to subjects and topics that are difficult. A timetable helps students manage their time and prevents last-minute cramming.

2. Revise all the work covered
Students should go through their notes, textbooks, assignments and other learning materials. They should revise systematically rather than waiting until the last few days before the examination. Where there are topics they do not understand, they should ask teachers, classmates or other appropriate sources for assistance.
3. Practise with past examination papers
Past examination papers are an important preparation tool. Students should practise answering questions under timed conditions. This helps them become familiar with examination requirements, improve their speed and accuracy, and identify areas that require further revision.
4. Concentrate on weak areas
Students should honestly identify the subjects and topics in which they are performing poorly and give them more attention. There is little value in spending all the revision time on areas that are already well understood. The weeks before examinations should be used to close learning gaps and improve weak grades.
5. Take care of your mind and body
Effective preparation is not only about reading. Students need adequate sleep, nutritious meals, physical activity and short breaks during study sessions. They should also reduce distractions such as excessive social media use, unnecessary television, unproductive outings and relationships or friendships that interfere with their studies.
The countdown has begun. Students should not wait for the examination timetable or the final week before taking their studies seriously. The work done now can make a significant difference when they finally sit for their examinations. There are no shortcuts to success. Read, revise, practice and remain disciplined.
