Beitbridge West legislator Cde Ruth Maboyi has called on Government and development agencies to accelerate the construction of roads in the area.
She said the poor state of roads had triggered acute transport shortages and in some cases public transport operators were pulling out of the major rural routes.
Speaking during a Zanu-PF “Thank You Rally” at Zezani Growth Point over the weekend, Cde Maboyi said the few remaining public transport operators were charging exorbitant fares.
“We have had several meetings with communities and it is apparent that the poor state of the roads has resulted in transport shortages,” she said.
“Some public transporters are pulling off the routes and the few remaining are charging exorbitant prices. It is important for Government through the local authority and development agencies to attend to the road infrastructure in this area.
Besides the poor road network, we have a serious power blackout that has crippled critical services in this constituency.
Our problem started two months ago when some power lines were destroyed by storms.
We implore the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company to urgently address the electricity shortages.”
She said the power blackout had affected major business centres, schools, clinics and irrigation schemes.
Cde Maboyi also called on Government to consider introducing Zupco buses to rural Beitbridge to abet transport woes.
