Drink of the week with Peter Matika
IT’S yellow in colour, and has a fruity and sweet-scented aroma. It’s a passion fruit Lagoon.
This is what I tasted this past Monday. The drink was prepared by a rather shy but tattooed young man who goes by the name Tyson Sibanda.
It’s quite a feminine drink if you ask me but soothes your parched throat.
Its ingredients are quite simple: Crushed ice, which is a serving or two, passion fruit cordial, simple syrup, of course for your alcohol white rum, a swig of lemonade, mint leaves, and soda water to top it off.

This should be served in a cocktail glass and garnished with lemon, which boosts the passion fruit flavour to add a little zing to it.
“It falls under the family of mojitos. You can play around with your cordials and fruits, which can be used to brighten them and to add flavour and scent,” said Tyson, quite a talkative chap but camera shy.
His secret ingredient is the pomegranate fruit (umumbu wesikhiwa) which adds a beautiful bright pink or red colour to the drink.
After a few sips of the drink, I sat there as I savoured the taste and flavours. It’s a great drink that you can have with a light snack, salty crisps with vinegar.
So while I was indulging in this new cocktail, a friend of mine happened to pop in and was surprised to see me sipping on a bright yellow cocktail.
She quickly giggled and said: “How’s your liver hanging? I have been following your articles and they are quite interesting. I see you have acquired some knowledge on alcohol, mind if I join you?”
And of course, I agreed but declined to have a second glass, as I was feeling like I was floating.
I think the rum and syrup are quite a good combination but really do whack and liven up the drink.
It’s quite a classy drink that can be shared among friends to share giggles and gossip, this I say referring to the fairer sex.
Anyway, till next week, remember cocktails are the in thing and are the best stress relievers.
l If you have an establishment and think your drink has what it takes to be profiled, send an email to [email protected] or WhatsApp 0772337433.
REMEMBER alcohol is not for sale to persons under the age of 18 and let’s not forget to drink responsibly.
