IT is imperative that the development of irrigation in Nyanga receives serious attention if the district is to make significant strides to the success of Zim-Asset and the 10-point plan for economic growth, Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said.

Speaking at Nyanga South victory celebrations hosted by the constituency member of National Assembly, Supa Mandiwanzira last Friday, VP Mnangagwa, who was represented by Zanu-PF chief whip, Cde Joram Gumbo, said Government was aware of several ongoing development projects taking place in the district and pledged to continue supporting the initiatives.

“I am aware that farmers across the constituency are looking to the Government to assist with inputs for this year’s agricultural season.

“The Government is currently looking into this issue to ensure inputs are sourced and distributed in time for the rains.

“I encourage all farmers to begin looking at farming as a business. This perspective will allow farmers to receive inputs in one season and through productive use of the inputs, farmers can become self sustainable in the coming agricultural season,” he said.

He implored Cde Mandiwanzira to look into ways of ensuring that farmers in his constituency receive training on how to handle farming as a business.

Recently, Cde Mandiwanzira sourced 40 pumps from friends and well-wishers which were distributed to several community garden projects such as Nyarerwe water project, Nyamuenda water project, Tanaka Mapenda garden, Simbarashe garden, Kuchocha garden and Ward 23 Village 5 (Ziwa).

Proposals were also made to rehabilitate irrigation schemes such as Nyakomba irrigation scheme which has received a grant of $15 million from the Japanese government, Nyajezi 4, 5, 9 and 10, Shiri water project, Sanyanga Gardens, Nyangombe, Sanyatwe, Borehole projects in Ward 17 among other projects.

VP Mnangagwa said there are several investment opportunities in the renewable energy sector in Nyanga South Constituency, namely the tenders for the Tsanga 3 MW Hydro project, 30 Megawatt Gairezi Hydro project which were won by HT Gen private and Intratek private limited respectively.

“It is my fervent hope that the promoters of these projects will immediately move to implement these projects in partnership with the local communities to ensure that they benefit from the jobs created in implementing the projects as well as from the income generated from the operations of the projects.

By 2018, these projects must become major sources of economic livelihood for Nyanga community,” he said.

Cde Mandiwanzira said he was working in unison with the District Development Fund, the Nyanga District Council and other stakeholders to develop the socio-economic development of the district.

“I am in Nyanga to make a legacy. I want to be remembered for developing Nyanga and improving livelihoods. Four key points of priority I am working on are irrigation schemes, road infrastructure, education and flawless health delivery system,” he said.
