THEY’RE saying it’s going to be a massive package filled with some deadly explosives that are going to explode right in the faces of local motocross fans at Donnybrook Park Raceway in Harare in December.
It’s going to be a blockbuster!
The message is coming from the organisers of this year’s Better Brands Jewellery Zimbabwe Summer Series which has has been slated for December 6, 8 and 10 at the home of motorsport competitions in this country — Donnybrook.
The Zimbabwe Summer Series is the season-ending motocross event in this country and it is spread over three days.
It will open with two days of Supercross (night racing) action on December 6 and 8 followed by a full day of some high octane motocross racing on the final day of the series on December 10.
It has over the past decade attracted top international dirt bike riders from the United States, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Botswana and Zambia, making it one of the biggest international sporting events to be held in this country annually.
And the Bogwheelers Club, who are the organisers of the Zimbabwe Summer Series, yesterday hinted that this year’s event “will be out of this world”.
They are saying it is going to attract the biggest number of foreign motocross riders in its history.
Speaking to Zimpapers Sports yesterday, Dougie Mellor of the Bogwheelers Club, said this year’s Zimbabwe Summer Series is going to attract the biggest contingent of international motocross riders from the United States, France and South Africa.
They’re also going to bring in some freestyle riders from South Africa as part of the entertainment package for the spectators, courtesy of their new title sponsors, Better Brands Jewellery.
“We’ve paid for the freestyle riders to come, so they’ll be doing the back flips and what have you.
“We’ve also paid Grant Foly to bring in some top South African riders…He will be bringing in 15 South African riders to grace this big international event.
“Our new title sponsors Better Brands Jewellery are also trying to bring in some top international motocross riders from the United States, France and South Africa too but it’s not yet officially confirmed.
“There is also a track designer whom we’ve brought on site today (yesterday) to help us in laying an international track.
“So, we’re trying to make it a far much bigger international event than before…It’s going to be a big Zimbabwe Summer Series,” Mellor said.
A source, who is close to the event’s sponsors, Better Brands Jewellery, told Zimpapers Sports yesterday that a number of top American and French motocross riders will be heading this way to grace the 2023 Zimbabwe Summer Series.
“We are busy trying to put everything together as there are a lot of things which needs to be done to bring these international riders to Zimbabwe for the Summer Series.
“We’ve to sort out their licenses, insurance, flights and accommodation and we are currently engaging the sponsors Better Brands Jewellery to help us out.
“But what I can safely say is that we’re definitely working hard to bring in more than 12 top international motocross riders from the United States, France and some from South Africa.
“I think this is going to be the biggest Zimbabwe Summer Series in the history of the sport and Zimbabwean motocross fans should brace themselves for some top notch motocross racing throughout the three days of the event,” said the same source who asked not to be named for some professional reasons.
Last year, the Zimbabwe Summer Series was back to its full throttle after it was shelved in 2020 and 2021 due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
More than 2 000 spectators thronged Donnybrook to watch the final day of the series last year.
