A sports tournament at the weekend brings together the staff of State regulating agencies to mix and improve their future co-operation.
The staff from the Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC), Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA), Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA), Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ), Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) will be participating in the sports tournament on Saturday.
Among the sporting activities taking place on the day will be men’s and women’s football and netball.
POTRAZ director general Dr Gift Machengete said the importance of the tournament was to foster synergies and collaborative regulation through interaction whereby regulators get to understand and appreciate each other’s roles and functions so that they can find areas where they can cooperate.
“The tournament, which is open to members of the public, also affords regulators a platform to showcase their services to members of the public,” Dr Machengete said.
“All this is in line with international best practice. The idea was mooted by POTRAZ after realising the need to foster synergies among regulators as a way of promoting collaborative regulation which is now international best practice.
“On the other hand, sport is a good way of harnessing friendships. Having people gather in formal settings may defeat the objective of creating lasting friendships.”
The event is expected to attract and draw hundreds of people from the corporate world as well as members of the public.
Sport serves as a special and vital connecting thread that unites individuals across and within societies in a world that is frequently divided.
By playing together these people were unwittingly learning the universal values of respect, tolerance and fair play.
No other social activity brings people together in such great numbers, and with so much passion and enjoyment.
Regardless of age, gender or ethnicity, sport is enjoyed by all; its reach is unrivalled.
