THE Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ)’s central board has recommended that the association’s assembly should deal with allegations of a constitutional breach by secretary-general Charmaine Chamboko for holding two positions.
The extraordinary meeting is to be held in two months’ time.
The central board, consisting of all provincial chairpersons and seven executive members held a virtual meeting on
Wednesday where they voted to let the congress deal with the constitutional matter.
Chamboko has been BUZ secretary-general for the past three years and was appointed the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) chairperson for media, communications, public relations and diplomacy in April.
The BUZ constitution doesn’t allow its office bearers to hold a position in another sporting organisation, but its central board felt that there is a need to revisit the constitution and address the “ambiguous” clauses.
Giants Basketball Club from Bulawayo filed a complaint with the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), citing violation of the BUZ constitution by the organisation’s president Joe Mujuru and Chamboko.
The club, through its legal representatives, Mabundu and Ndlovu Law Chambers, want the SRC to respond to its appeal by October 5.
Giants allege that Mujuru, Chamboko and the Bulawayo Basketball Association are dragging their feet in resolving the issue and want Chamboko to step down from BUZ.
However, Mujuru said they will follow the central board’s recommendations.
“All along there was debate on which committee must deliberate on the matter you’re referring to because it involves the issue of interpreting the constitution.
The central board held a virtual meeting on Wednesday with seven out of 10 provinces and the executive members present. After deliberations, it was agreed that the matter be pushed to the extra-ordinary congress to be held in December,” said Mujuru. — @ZililoR
