THE cold temperatures and cloudy skies that started on Sunday, driven by a cold south-easterly airflow, will persist until Friday, with the Meteorological Services Department urging the public to take necessary precautions to keep warm.
In a statement yesterday, the MSD said the cold spell would affect Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, the Midlands, Masvingo, Manicaland, Mashonaland East, and Harare Metropolitan provinces.
“A cold and moist south-easterly air flow is expected in the country which should result in cloudy, windy and cold conditions. Although cloud breaks are expected during the day, daytime temperatures are anticipated to remain subdued,” said the MSD.
Members of the public and the vulnerable should keep warm to avoid increased chances of catching a cough, influenza or a cold.
The MSD also urged the public to take precautions when heating their homes or bedrooms.
“If there is need to use a brazier (mbaura/imbaula) or fire to keep warm, please ensure the room is well-ventilated.”
A brazier in an unventilated room can generate poisonous carbon monoxide.
The Department urged the public to consult health practitioners for any health-related ailments.
