Celebrating a remarkable journey in the Creative Cultural Industries (CCIs), Bulawayo’s well-travelled dance ensemble, Ezimnyama Dance Ensemble is commemorating 15 years of artistic prowess this year.

Established in 2009 under the visionary leadership of Phibion “Fobie” Ncube, the group has become synonymous with cultural vibrancy and creative expression.

The upcoming festivities, themed “Celebrating Artistic Excellence”, are scheduled for February 16 at Indlovu Youth Centre in Bulawayo. The celebrations promise an array of talent, featuring performances by Great Stars, Mandie Mae, Asante Mo, Iyasa, Thandy Dhlana, and the Gwanda-based Zhezhingtonz.

Fobie expressed that the choice of venue for the celebrations was deliberate, as they are aiming to connect with and give back to the immediate community which has been a pillar of their success.

“This event stands as a heartfelt token of gratitude to our community and steadfast supporters. The artistes selected for the line up are recognised for their outstanding contributions and the incredible energy they bring to the arts,” Fobie said.

Reflecting on the past 15 years, he said: “We cherish the remarkable moments we’ve had. Seeing a Bulawayo-based group making international headlines is a source of immense pride. The reception of our work, both locally and internationally, has been overwhelmingly positive, creating enduring memories that hold a special place in our hearts.”

Acknowledging the challenges faced in their journey, Fobie reminisced about the early days when they grappled with limited resources and scant support.

“The initial stages were tough; we had nothing. Rehearsing tirelessly, creating productions on an empty stomach, lacking funds for transportation – only a few believed in the dream. Yet, amidst those hardships, we’ve grown and thrived. I want to extend my gratitude to our incredible fans and supporters who have stood with Ezimnyama from day one. We promise to continue making you proud,” Fobie affirmed.

He said their plans for 2024 will be unveiled during the celebrations with members of the public encouraged to join the group in large numbers.

Under the stewardship of Fobie, Ezimnyama Dance Ensemble has graced numerous local and international stages, making headlines and earning accolades for their compelling performances. The ensemble’s dedication to excellence is evident in its dynamic choreography, mesmerising performances, and unwavering passion for the arts. – @mthabisi_mthire.
