F1 bans TV crews from pit-lane

FORMULA One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has banned television crews from standing in the pit-lane after a cameraman was stuck by a loose wheel during Sunday’s German Grand Prix. Paul Allen suffered a broken collarbone, two broken ribs and concussion after being hit in the back by the right, rear tyre of Mark Webber’s Red Bull, which his pit crew had failed to properly attach.

Allen has remained in a Koblenz hospital for further treatment. In an effort to ensure there is no repeat, Ecclestone has ordered that all camera crews must now operate from the relative safety of the pit wall.

Previously, up to a maximum of six Formula One Management crews were granted unlimited pit-lane access during qualifying and the race.

Ecclestone said: “It’s a terrible thing to say, but it was just one of those things.

“There was a whole bunch of mechanics and the tyre could have hit any one of those guys.

“The cameraman just happened to be looking the wrong way at the wrong time.

“In future, all our camera crews will only be allowed to film from the pit wall.”-Sportsmail.
