NEW Golden Arrows midfielder Jonah Fabisch has identified Manchester City and Egypt forward Omar Marmoush as the toughest opponent he has faced in his professional career.
The Zimbabwe international came up against Marmoush during the Warriors’ dramatic 2-1 defeat to Egypt in their opening Group B match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Fabisch was one of Zimbabwe’s standout performers as the Warriors held their own against the seven-time African champions for much of the contest. Zimbabwe took a surprise lead in the 20th minute through Prince Dube at Stade Adrar in Agadir and looked on course for a famous result before Egypt mounted a late comeback.
Marmoush eventually proved decisive, drawing on his quality and persistence to break Zimbabwe’s resistance with a powerful finish from a tight angle in the 64th minute. Mohamed Salah later struck in stoppage time to seal victory for the North Africans.
“The toughest opponent I have faced was Omar Marmoush at the Africa Cup of Nations,” said Fabisch.
“Playing directly against him was a difficult challenge.”
Marmoush was a constant threat throughout the match, registering four shots on target and earning the Man of the Match award for his influential performance as Egypt overturned Zimbabwe’s lead.
Fabisch also made his presence felt in attack, coming close to scoring when his first-half header forced Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy into a save shortly before Dube found the net.
The match was particularly memorable for the midfielder as it marked his debut appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations, a milestone he regards as the highlight of his football career so far.
“My favourite moment in football was representing Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup of Nations,” he said.
The midfielder has since embarked on a new chapter in his career after joining South African Betway Premiership side Golden Arrows ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The 24-year-old signed for the Durban-based club as a free agent following the expiry of his contract with German third-tier outfit Erzgebirge Aue at the end of last season.
“I am a new player at Golden Arrows, and both the team and I need as much support as possible,” said Fabisch.
“I hope we can enjoy a successful journey together and win as many matches as possible.”
orn in Nairobi, Kenya, on 13 August 2001, Fabisch comes from a family with a strong sporting pedigree. His late father, Reinhard Fabisch, was a respected football coach who previously managed the Zimbabwe national team, while his mother represented Zimbabwe in the 100-metre hurdles.
Fabisch began his football journey with German side TUS Altenberge before progressing through the youth ranks at Hamburger SV. He later featured for Hamburger SV II, 1. FC Magdeburg II and Erzgebirge Aue, steadily building experience in the German football system.
The midfielder believes his versatility and ability to play comfortably with both feet are among the attributes he brings to Golden Arrows.
“One of my biggest strengths as a player is my ability to use both feet,” he said.
“I believe there are very few players who are as comfortable with both feet as I am.”
Fabisch, who is fluent in both German and English, also singled out Warriors captain Marvelous Nakamba as one of the teammates he most enjoyed playing alongside during Zimbabwe’s AFCON campaign.
“It is difficult to single out one favourite Zimbabwe teammate, but I enjoyed playing alongside Marvelous Nakamba in midfield,” he said.
