The National Museums and Monuments in Zimbabwe has embarked on a major facelift of the Shona village at the Great Zimbabwe monuments for the structures to reflect the true history of the people who lived there. The upgrading is being done with assistance from the Culture Fund.
The village is very popular with tourists attracted by traditional dance troupes and various artifacts that portray the rich Zimbabwean culture.
Some structures at the village are deteriorating due to old age. NMMZ Masvingo regional director Mr Lovemore Mandima told The Herald last week that they wanted to build nine new bigger huts at the village.
This will bring to 14 the number of huts at the village while three granaries and a new traditional healer’s hut will also be built.
“We received US$5000 from the Culture Fund which we are using to carry out part of the upgrading work but we need about US$14 000 to complete the whole project and it is our hope that the Shona village will truly portray the various stages in the evolution of the Shona people from the founding of the Great Zimbabwe state onwards,” he said.
