A 42-YEAR-OLD Harare man has appeared in court facing robbery charges after allegedly masquerading as a police officer during a daring daylight heist in Ruwa.
Takawira Guruza appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo, who remanded him in custody pending a bail ruling.
According to prosecutor Mr Lawrence Gangarahwe, Guruza acted in concert with four accomplices identified as James Dululu, Ngoni, Shoko and Courage – who are still at large.
The gang is accused of staging a fake arrest on December 2, 2025, before robbing Wesley Katsatsa and Pretty Katsatsa of US$600. The court heard that the suspects posed as law-enforcement officers in to carry out the robbery.
To facilitate their scheme, they approached a taxi driver, Joakim Kwenda, and misrepresented themselves as police officers who needed transport.
Using Kwenda’s Toyota Wish, the gang travelled to George Shopping Centre in Ruwa, where they allegedly confronted Wesley Katsatsa and accused him of committing an unspecified offence.
They then bundled him into the vehicle and searched a small bag he was carrying, from which they allegedly stole US$600. When Pretty Katsatsa demanded the return of the bag, the accused reportedly threw it back to her empty.
The situation escalated when the gang forced Kwenda out of the driver’s seat and attempted to drive away.
In a dramatic turn of events, Pretty Katsatsa jumped onto the bonnet of the car and screamed for help, attracting the attention of bystanders. Members of the public stopped the vehicle and apprehend Guruza, while the other suspects fled with the stolen cash.
