Fake driver’s licence lands ZEC official in soup

Mashonaland West Bureau
A SENIOR Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) official has been arraigned before the courts for allegedly using a fake driver’s licence to secure employment. Austin Ndlovu (47), who is employed as the ZEC Mashonaland West provincial elections officer, was issued with a vehicle by the electoral body on the belief that he had a driver’s licence.

He appeared before magistrate Mr Felix Mawadze facing fraud charges as defined in Section 136(a)(b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Ndlovu pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to tomorrow.
The prosecutor, Mrs Kesia Teveraishe, told the court that sometime in January 2013, Ndlovu allegedly hatched a plan to defraud ZEC and presented a fraudulently obtained driver’s licence for vetting. The alleged fraud came to light after Ndlovu was found to have been involved in six separate road accidents.

The court further heard that in January 2018 detectives from Chinhoyi Criminal Investigations Department received a tip off through the suggestion box and investigations revealed that Ndlovu was using a fake driver’s licence.

The alleged fake driver’s licence was recovered and verification with Central Vehicle Registration in Harare established that his name was not in the system.
This led to his arrest.
