A SELF-PROCLAIMED spiritual healer in Mutare has been SLAMMED with an 18-year prison sentence after a monstrous rape masked as a “holy ritual” left a community reeling—and exposed how predators exploit faith to prey on the vulnerable!
According to a National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) bulletin, the unnamed Madzibaba (44) targeted a 46-year-old neighbour suffering from severe menstrual bleeding, luring her with promises of “healing.” After doling out herbs, the fraudulent prophet claimed “evil spirits” tormented her—then took her to a river near Gimboki on April 16, 2024, for a twisted “cleansing.” There, he brutally raped her while she believed it was part of the ritual.
The nightmare unravelled when the victim’s husband grew suspicious and uncovered the truth.
“She trusted him as a holy man—he turned her faith into hell!” the court heard.
The Mutare Regional Magistrates’ Court blasted the fake healer, convicting him of rape and sentencing him to 18 years behind bars.
The case’s chilling message: fake healers weaponise desperation. The victim, traumatised and betrayed, represents countless others ensnared by wolves in spiritual clothing.
