A MWENEZI man who savagely murdered a 29-year-old villager by smashing his skull with a wooden stool has walked scot-free after a court ruled him too mentally unstable to face justice.
The blood-soaked crime, detailed in an official National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) bulletin, unfolded on March 21, 2022, when the accused and victim clashed after a trip to a local shopping centre. What began as a heated argument exploded into brutal violence, with the killer allegedly grabbing a stool and bludgeoning the victim to death in a frenzy.
The dying man’s final act? A chilling cry for his wife, who later discovered his body drenched in blood near their homestead.
Villagers turned vigilantes, tracking the accused’s footprints straight to his home, where they cornered him and recovered the gruesome murder weapon. But in a courtroom bombshell, judges acquitted the killer on grounds of insanity, ordering him confined to a psychiatric hospital instead of a prison cell.
The NPAZ called the case a devastating reminder of how mental health crises and violent crime collide.
“Combating crime means confronting these complexities,” the authority said.
