Falcon dominate Matabeleland U-18 rugby squad

FALCON College dominate the Matabeleland Rugby Under-18 squad that is travelling for the Old Mutual national trials at St Johns College in Harare over the weekend.
The provincial trials were held last weekend with Falcon contributing 10 of the15 travelling players.
Christian Brothers College and Plumtree had two each while Milton High School have only one.

The players will be battling to make the cut in the Zimbabwean team that will represent the country at the Craven Week festival in South Africa in July.

Team manager Brendan French said there would be no squad training or travelling arrangements. Players would have to make their own travel arrangements.

“There will be no preparations or any travelling arrangements, so players from different schools will meet there. The format has changed this year. They will not play as Matabeleland squads but they will make it to the trials,” said French.

National Under-18 coach Godwin Murambiwa will use a different format to select the Craven Week side as players will not play in their provincial sides but will be grouped into teams so as to balance the squads.

“The idea is balanced teams so that a player from a province with a weaker base might also get a chance to be noticed as well. That would be fair to everyone as there would be no strong sides,” said French.

Last weekend Mashonaland schools dominated the national Under-14 provisional trials sponsored by Old Mutual.
