FALCON College thumped Matopo High School 67-13 in the Matabeleland South provincial finals of the top schools basketball Under-20 boys’ tournament held at Falcon College in Esigodini on Friday.
The two will represent the province in the national finals later this year.
Matopo, Falcon, JZ Moyo, Embakwe and Plumtree were the schools that participated in the tournament.
Only the top schools in the country participate in this tournament with every province represented.
The hosts and defending champions have two slots each.
Zimbabwe Basketball Association technical president and Falcon College basketball coach Sikhumbuzo “SV” Ndlovu said this time around they would as a province try and utilise home advantage to win the tournament.
“We will have to use our home advantage to win the tournament which has eluded us for quite some time,” he said.
Ndlovu said that the Friday tournament was a wrap up of the boys’ season which was supposed to have ended during the first term.
“We are already behind schedule, normally the boys season ends in the first term, with second term meant for girls’ qualifiers and then the third term for the national competitions for both teams.
“In Bulawayo, for instance, I know Milton High School will be coming and Harare, which is the defending province, would be sending two schools Prince Edward and Churchill Boys High School,” he said.
He disclosed that they were plans by the province to have more workshops that will help improve the standard of the game in all schools in Matabeleland South.
“We want to live up to the billing of our yesteryear performance so we will run workshops aimed at addressing grey areas,” said Ndlovu.
