TODAY, 27 April 2025, we pause as a nation, as a continent, and as football lovers around the world, to honour the brave souls we lost in the 1993 Zambia National Football Team tragedy — a day forever etched in Zambia’s heart.
On that fateful evening, a Zambian Air Force DHC-5 Buffalo aircraft plunged into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after takeoff from Libreville, Gabon. The team was en route to Dakar, Senegal, where they were to play a crucial 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Their dreams, their talent, and their lives were tragically cut short.
All 25 passengers and 5 crew members aboard the plane perished, leaving a gaping wound in Zambian football and national pride.

By a twist of fate, a few key players survived because they were traveling separately:
• Kalusha Bwalya (then playing in the Netherlands for PSV Eindhoven)
• Charles Musonda (injured at the time and based in Belgium)
• Johnson Bwalya (based in Switzerland)
Their survival would later prove vital in helping rebuild a broken team and leading Zambia back to football glory.
*A Dream Interrupted, A Spirit That Lives On*
The 1993 Chipolopolo team was one of Zambia’s finest — talented, ambitious, and full of hope. They were not only chasing qualification for Zambia’s first-ever World Cup appearance, but they were also uniting a nation under the dream of global football glory.
Though they were taken too soon, they are not forgotten.
Their courage, their dreams, and their undying love for Zambia live on in every match played by the Chipolopolo, in every young boy and girl who dares to dream, and in the hearts of every Zambian.
Their ultimate legacy came full circle in 2012 when Zambia, inspired by their memory, lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy — fittingly in Libreville, not far from where their fallen brothers took their last breath.
