Fambira, Dhlamini win table tennis tournament

TABLE tennis rising teenage sensation Tinotenda Fambira bounced back to winning ways when he won the Zimbabwe Closed Championships at Dangamvura High in Mutare on Sunday.

It is the last event on the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union calendar.

Fambira, who finished second in the last national tournament the Mashonaland East Open, managed to beat Vickram Singh.

Fambira from Mash East beat 48-year-old Singh after accumulating 67 points against the latter’s 56 points.

Aidan Mabaudi was third ahead of Brian Chamboko, who had the same number of points 46. The women open category was won by Ashley Dhlamini from Bulawayo on 67 points with Elizabeth Seyitini of Masvingo coming second with seasoned campaigner Vongai Zhankinuyu finishing third.

In the U-21 men’s section Mabhaudi was victorious beating Trust Madoro of Manicaland as Fambira was third.

The women’s Under-21 category was won by Tatenda Timire on 67 points while Seyitini was second and Naama Boterere third. Madoro finally got it right in his U-15 category, winning the gold medal ahead of Shalom Ma-koni who had 56 points as Manicaland Province through Kiara Gopito dominated all the three places.

Timire also got it right in the Under-15 girls as she walked away with a gold medal ahead of Munashe Mlaka and Sheila Goredema. In the U-10 girls’ category Princess Tichivangani took home gold ahead of her colleagues Talia Mahachi and Point Pashi who settled for silver and bronze respectively. Kundai Goremusandu of Mashonaland East scooped the U-10 boys’ title after he defeated Tamutenda Mugadza and Kupakwashe Honye.
