Families benefit from Presidential inputs scheme

Addressing villagers at Chizinga Business Centre on Friday, Mhondoro-Ngezi House of Assembly representative Cde Bright Matonga (Zanu-PF) hailed the President’s support and said they are expecting a bumper maize harvest this season.

“We thank the President for the support that we have received and it is above what was given to farmers in the national budget. Given the good rains we are receiving we expect a bumper harvest this season,” he said.

Cde Matonga said youths in the constituency would also benefit from the scheme. “We have also targeted youths and child-headed families in the community as they are the most vulnerable. We do not want the youths to engage in illegal activities, which is why we always want to find them something meaningful to do,” he said.

The families received 20kg of maize seed and 10kg of Compound D and ammonium nitrate respectively.
Apart from the households that has benefited, churches and Government workers in the constituency also received 2 tonnes of maize seed and 30 tonnes of fertilisers.

The President’s input scheme was launched at the Zanu-PF Annual People’s Conference in Mutare in December 2010 in an effort to boost productivity this summer season.
This follows a failure by Finance Minister Tendai Biti to adequately provide support for farmers in the 2011 National Budget.- The Herald
