A family from Luveve suburb in Bulawayo has reportedly disowned their daughter after discovering that she was involved in a same-sex relationship, in a case that has stirred tension within both her immediate and extended families.
The woman, identified as Mercy Khumalo, is alleged to have been caught by her husband in a compromising situation with another woman at their matrimonial home in Mpopoma. The husband, a cross-border transporter, had reportedly returned unexpectedly from South Africa when he made the discovery.
A family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident had brought shame to the family, citing their strong cultural and traditional background.
“Our son-in-law caught Mercy with another woman in a compromising position at their house in Mpopoma. He was coming from South Africa and they were not expecting him back. As a family, we view this as a taboo act, especially considering that our father is a village head who is firmly rooted in traditional beliefs,” said the relative.
The situation is reportedly further complicated by the standing of Khumalo’s in-laws, who are said to be elders in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. According to the family, the incident has been viewed as a serious embarrassment within their religious community.
The case highlights the complex intersection of cultural values, legal frameworks, and personal freedoms in Zimbabwe, where same-sex relationships remain illegal
