A DEVASTATING fire has left the Moyo family without a home after their homestead was allegedly torched by suspected Zanu-PF supporters in Sigola village, Matabeleland South province.
Mr Phllani Moyo, his wife Ms Memory Siska, and their three children are now struggling to find shelter.
Fellow villagers claim that the family was targeted for refusing to join the ruling party and for their perceived support of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
“They were accused of selling out after the elections,” said a neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous. “The family has never been active in politics, but that didn’t stop the Zanu-PF supporters from attacking them.”
Another villager, Mrs Nkiwane, added, “We are living in fear. If they can do this to the Moyos, who’s next? We urge the authorities to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
When approached for comment, Mr Moyo was visibly shaken. “I’m traumatized. I can’t talk about it now. My priority is the safety of my children. We just need a place to call home again and where we could safely say we are safe. Our crime is just refusing to be active in politics.”
He revealed that his family was equally traumatised after the occurrence.
“As you can see my children can’t stop crying and my wife suffered a mental episode after the incident, I honestly do not know who to turn to, I feel unsafe in my own community,” said Mr Moyo.
Efforts to get a comment from Ms Siska were fruitless as she was continually sobbing and could not say a coherent sentence as she also tried to calm down their three children.
The family is currently seeking assistance from local authorities and humanitarian organisations. The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with many calling for an end to political violence.
