A family in Greendale suburb, Harare, is appealing for financial and material assistance after their house and property was gutted by fire.

According to the family, they suspected that the fire was caused by a water heater which exploded.

The fire incident occurred at around 1pm on Wednesday at 78 Coronation Road in Greendale.

Police and other  stakeholders are still conducting investigations to ascertain the actual cause of the fire. When the fire brigade arrived at the scene, all the property had been destroyed, with only a few things being recovered.

Tinashe Warikandwa (36), a family member said when the fire broke out he was not home with his two siblings, the house was locked.

“I received a phone call for me to rush home, only to find the house on fire.

Warikandwa said he also suspected a water heater explosion.

“I suspect the water heater which we left turned on before Zesa came to cause the explosion caused the flame, the fire destroyed seven rooms to the ground and the property reduced to ashes in the inferno leaving two rooms safe, one room was engulfed with flames causing other rooms to catch fire. Luckily no one was in the house.

He could not give an estimate of the value of property that was destroyed. The entire tiled rooftop, ceiling, furniture, blankets, clothes, food items, with other valuables including title deeds, school uniforms, birth certificates, money were lost during the blaze.

He however, said the family was appealing for both financial and material assistance.

“Our hands are just open for any assistance. In terms of the house, it means we have to rebuild it again so any form of assistance we would be glad. We lost everything, even basics such as food stuffs and blankets. So our plea is for well-wishers to chip in as our hands are currently tied,” he said.
