BULAWAYO accapella outfit Family Voices’ will record a song with superstar Oliver Mtukudzi. Tuku has taken the group under his wing and will be holding a number of shows with them after seeing their potential. The group has taken to the genre which is regarded by many as a preserve of Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) singers and seems to be doing well.
This has resulted in Tuku giving them the nod to do accapella renditions of his songs.
In an interview, a member of the group, Brighton Ncube, said they first met Tuku in 2011 after performing at the Nama awards ceremony in Harare.
“He came to us after our performance and said our music had touched him in a great way.
“He told us that our music was beautiful and encouraged us to keep moving forward,” he said.
Ncube said this year they performed at the “Tuku at 60” celebratory gigs in Bulawayo and Harare.
“After the Harare celebrations, we sat down with Tuku and agreed to do an accapella song together. The song will be on both our forthcoming albums.
“The old man gave us permission to do accapella renditions of most of his songs and fans should expect to hear these at the Bulawayo Shutdown,” he said.
“Bulawayo Shutdown” which will feature Tuku, Sulumani Chimbetu and Iyasa, will be held at the Amphitheatre on Friday next week.
Already, Family Voices has toured South Africa, Kenya, Botswana and Namibia among other countries and will be part of the “Bulawayo Shutdown” gig on 13 December.
The group is made up of Tinashe Chitsaka, Luke Kamanga, Ronald Sithole, Bobby James, Bazel Mafu, Michael Sibanda, Melusi Sibanda and Brighton Ncube.
Coming in as the third generation of the Family Voices with roots in the Family of God (FOG) church, the group seems to have made an impact compared to its predecessors.
These new group members took over from a generation of singers which includes Idols Africa stars, Eric Moyo and Mkhululi Bhebhe who now have successful solo careers.
Apart from Tuku’s songs, the group also does cover version of songs from various artistes including Lovemore Majaivana.
“Fans should expect a great gig next week and we have some acts which will sweep them off their feet.
“They should come watch us give them a polished performance,” Ncube said.
