Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Lupane
The Lupane District annual Agricultural Show kicked off at the local board hall today with 110 communal farmers drawn from across the district exhibiting various farm produce.
There are also four schools showcasing produce from their agricultural projects as well as scientific innovations.
In an interview at the end of Day One, the Lupane District Agronomist, Ms Charity Changoroma, said there is an increase in the number of farmers, largely as a result of better rains that the district experienced.
“Some of the exhibitors brought their craftwork, which is part of their resilience mechanism, especially if climate change effects affect their agricultural produce, so we are generally excited about this,” said Ms Changoroma.
She said there is also the success story of Village Business Units (VBUs), whose farmers are selling their produce such as cabbages, onions, tomatoes and chomolia vegetables.
“Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are providing funding to some of the VBUs,” said Ms Changoroma.
The show will be officially opened and closed tomorrow.
