Farmers have called on traditional leaders and other local authorities to spearhead community programmes that seek to preserve and conserve the country’s natural resources. Zimbabwe Farmers Union president, Mr Silas Hungwe made this call while addressing farmers at the union’s just-ended 73rd annual congress held in Gweru.
Mr Hungwe said Government should enforce the laws that protect the environment, especially the unwarranted cutting down of trees and burning of bushes.
The last decade has seen unwarranted destruction of the environment and natural resources. Veld fires have reached phenomenal levels since independence. Human lives have been lost and wildlife has not been spared.
There is need for Government to enforce the laws that make for the protection of the environment, especially the unwarranted cutting down of trees and burning of bushes,” he said.
Traditional leaders needed to spearhead community programmes that seek to preserve and conserve our natural resources.
“Water for domestic and production purposes is now in short supply.
Rural communities and their leadership structure with the Government and development partners should hold hands and begin to address this terrible scourge,” he said.
