FARMERS in natural regions 4 and 5 must adhere to agro-ecological practices and prioritise the cultivation of traditional grains, which are better suited to their local climatic conditions.
Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development permanent secretary, Professor Obert Jiri, made the call at a recent Pfumvudza/Intwasa field day at Marirangwe High School in Ward 14, Bikita District, Masvingo.
Prof Jiri noted that the initiative sought to increase the production of traditional grains, with crops selected based on the specific needs of agro-ecological regions 4 and 5.
“As we monitor our Pfumvudza/Intwasa planting progress across the country, we anticipate supporting three million households under the programme this season,” he said.
“Traditional grains are particularly suited to the climate here in Bikita, which falls within regions 4 and 5. It is crucial that our farmers adhere to the principles of agro-ecology.”
Prof Jiri urged farmers to take advantage of rain breaks to complete their planting, as rainfall activity continues across the country.
