Farming activities for October

l Ensure all equipment is in good condition and repair tobacco barns.
l Shell groundnut seed ready for planting.
l Continue with land preparation (old and new for different land uses).
l Sow strategic high value horticulture crops such as cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons and strawberries.
Tobacco /cotton
l Register as a grower before October 31.
l Plant/sow cottonseed after October 5 in the Lowveld and after October 20 in other areas.
Pests and disease control
l Scout for pests and diseases in irrigated crops.
l Plant diseases are expected at this time of the year, take precautionary measures.
Livestock
l Supplementary feed all livestock until the rains.
l Start bulling heifers.
l Castrate calves surgically at one month and de-horn.
l Cull cows for old age before bulling.
l Vaccinate against vector borne diseases such as Lumpy Skin disease, Rift Valley Fever and Blue Tongue
