ONE person was killed following a stabbing incident outside a venue that hosted the second edition of the Big Clash, a show which featured top Zimbabwean Rhumba artistes in South Africa on Saturday.
The event, held at Newtown Music Factory in Johannesburg featured performances by Insimbi ZeZhwane, Mxolisi “Mr Bones” Ndlovu and Amathonga Amahle led by Mcebisi Mlilo.
According to reports, the victim was stabbed outside the venue while the show was in progress and ran inside seeking help. He later succumbed to the injuries. The deceased has been identified as Mr Mongameli Ngwenya from Tsholotsho.
Show organiser Phakama “PK” Nkomo confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
“Many of you know what transpired during our music show over the weekend. We mourn with the family. We have met them to assist with burial arrangements and we appeal for further support,” he wrote on Facebook.
Performing group Insimbi ZeZhwane condemned the incident, calling for greater responsibility among patrons.
“While we do not yet have full details of what transpired, it is deeply disappointing that some people attend shows carrying weapons. We don’t need support from individuals who promote violence — they should stay away.

“We survive through music, and such actions threaten our livelihood. We hope the perpetrator will be brought to justice. To the Ngwenya family, we extend our deepest condolences,” said band leader Meluleki “Brema” Moyo.
Mr Bones Ndlovu also expressed concern, warning that such incidents could discourage artistes from performing in South Africa.
“We appreciate the support, but we’re saddened by how events unfolded. We aren’t accustomed to such situations. We travelled to entertain people, but some came with harmful intentions,” he said.

One of the musicians, who requested to remain anonymous, criticised the poor security measures during the event.
“Anyone could jump onto the stage, and even in our changing areas, people could freely enter. The organisers need to seriously review their security protocols because next time, an artiste could be killed on stage,” he said.
The incident adds to a troubling pattern of violence linked to entertainment events. In 2022, comedian Mahlalela (Mthulisi Moyo) was shot after a show, while in 2017, a fan was killed and several others were injured following a dispute over a stolen phone at a music event.
