Father forces under-age daughter into marriage

IN a world that is advocating for the elimination of early child marriages, a Zimunya man risked his liberty after he was remanded in custody for forcing his minor daughter to marry an elderly man.

Rwanda Mushipe appeared before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura, facing the charges of forcing his daughter to marry an elderly man.

Mushipe denied the charges and said his daughter was lying.

Representing the State was Mr Fletcher Karombe.

Circumstances surrounding the matter were that Mushipe forced his Form Three daughter to marry Cephas Mamhosva after he allegedly found the two together.

“Mushipe found his daughter in the company of Mamhosva and he asked his daughter who the man was, but she failed to give a convincing explanation.

“She was later ordered by his father to return where she was and she quickly lodged a police report leading to Mushipe’s arrest,” said Mr Karombe.

However, Mushipe denied the allegations saying his daughter was fabricating lies against him.

“I am denying the charges because I never chased her away from home. She only ran away from home after I saw her in the company of her boyfriend, Mamhosva,” said Mushipe.

Mrs Chiundura remanded Mushipe in custody and adjourned the matter to February 10 for trial.
