A FATHER and son are in trouble after they were allegedly found in illegal possession of ivory worth US$3000.
They were looking for a quick sale.
Bernard Chiumbe, 50, and Vincent Chiumbe, 25, of Old Tafara, appeared before magistrate Caroline Matanga.
The court heard that on Monday, detectives from CID Minerals received a tip-off that the duo was looking for ivory buyers in Mabvuku.
Acting on the tip-off, Detective Sergeant Murahwa called Bernard, purporting to be a buyer, and they agreed to meet at Old Tafara Shopping Centre, Old Tafara, Harare.
The team of detectives proceeded to the meeting place in two vehicles. The one posing as the buyer, called Bernard to his car, and they agreed to complete the transaction at Sunbird Tarven Bar, which is a distance away from the shops.
Bernard went to the bar on foot and waited for the ‘buyer’ and after about fifteen minutes, the ivory was brought in a truck.
Upon showing the buyer the ivory, which was in the white sack, the team of detectives pounced on him and he drove off.
Bernard was subdued at Chemhanza ground, which is about 800 metres away from the Sunbird Tarven Bar.
The detectives arrested Vincent, who was still at the bar.
The duo failed to produce any documentation authorising them to deal in ivory.
The ivory weighed 19,30 kilogrammes and had a street value of US$3 281.
