A Nyanga man has rejected a US$1 divorce token from his son-in-law saying his daughter is worth much more than that.
Edias Chimuswe said he was shocked and denigrated by Charles Nyamuonwa’s offer, which he considered a mockery to his daughter’s dignity and value.
Chimuswe said he used the money but declared that his daughter, Charity Chimuswe, is still married to Nyamuonwa.
The father and son-in-law duo appeared before Acting Chief Saunyama’s court recently, with Chimuswe pointing out that his daughter is still loyal and faithful to her husband despite his abusiveness.
“I am disgusted by how my son-in-law has been treating my daughter. They have been staying separately for eight years. He has been dragging my daughter to different courts without informing me.
“When he eventually approached me on June 10, he gave me US$1 which he now claims was a divorce token for my daughter. I did not consider it as a divorce token because it was too small. I took it as a court summon fee,” said Chimuswe.
He said if Nyamuonwa wants his daughter out of his life for good, he should give her a befitting divorce token and share their property fairly.
“Their property sharing case is still pending before the civil court. The couple has a car, a house, and and a lot of furniture. Above all, he should help maintain his children. I also want my daughter to be free from him,” said Chimuswe.
Charity confirmed that Nyamuonwa gave a dollar to her father as a divorce token.
She insisted that she is no longer interested in the marriage.
Charity said for the past eight years, Nyamuonwa has not set foot at their Nyanga matrimonial home after relocating to Rusape where he found a new woman.
“I have been sexually-starved and staying alone for the past eight years. He should just officially divorce me because I am tired of being tied to someone who does not love me. I am tired of waiting for him to come back home. I have come to the realisation that he will never come back as he now has a new family in Rusape,” she said.
Charity said she feels rejected, frustrated and unhappy in the marriage, adding that she has tried everything to rekindle their romance, but to no avail.
“I believe that we are incompatible as a couple. We would be better off separating officially. For eight good years, he has not visited us at home or my bedroom and his children miss him.
“He left while going to Rusape for work and never came back home. He completely turned his back on us after hooking up with a new lover in Rusape,” she said.
In response, Nyamuonwa said Charity and him are already divorced.
“I gave them the divorce token on June 10, and I thought that by now she should have moved out of my homestead. They claim that I am yet to divorce this woman, yet I have already done so.
“I will give them another dollar so that this marriage can be dissolved. I have had enough of it, Charity is thick-headed,” said Nyamuonwa.
