FC Platinum moved two points beneath log leaders – CAPS United – with a comfortable win over Yadah at their fortress Mandava yesterday, thereby vindicating coach Lizwe Sweswe who had promised to start their title charge in this game.
Kevin Madzongwe, Perfect Chikwende and reigning Soccer Star of the Year Rodwell Chinyengetere scored for the miners, while Honey Chimutimunzeve scored a consolation for the visitors. The champions had a congested fixture schedule owing to their CAF Champions League duties. Since taking charge at Mandava, Sweswe has won two back to back champions league matches and managed a share of spoils in three league games. After last weekend’s stalemate in Kariba, Sweswe told his supporters not to press the panic button as he was set to chase down the leaders starting with this match. At the end of yesterday’s match, he remained humble, probably aware that pacesetters CAPS United, who are in action today, could restore their five-point advantage at the top.
“I am happy that we have improved in terms of scoring (and) today we managed a better scoring margin. “This win means a lot for us as it also helps us keep the pace with those already in the title race.
“I am also hoping the win will boost our confidence levels so that by the time we end the season, we will have a better goal difference, which is important,” said Sweswe. Basement side Yadah are still in the murky waters of relegation and their coach Genesis Mangombe complained about the officiating, which he claims resulted in their loss.
“Losing a match against a good team is fine , but losing when the referee is all over us is agonising. “The first two goals were awards from the referee, even the penalty was a gift. We shall launch a complaint against this,” said Mangombe.
