thrashing of Highlanders – as the Castle Premiership returns after a two-week break.
The two clash this afternoon at Mandava in Zvishavane. This could be the platinum miners’ big test.
Despite their recent wobbles, FC Platinum remain joint top of the league, level on points with Motor Action, but it appears Rahman Gumbo’s team are feeling the strain of life at the top.
Their opponents seem to be enjoying life under club legend Lloyd Chitembwe who has managed two victories against Kiglon and Bosso sandwiched with an away defeat at Hwange. In the reverse encounter CAPS United, then in the midst of a crisis after a high-scoring start to the season, drew 2-2 with FC Platinum and will be eager to turn the tables.
CAPS United will be missing Evans Gwekwerere who is on trials at South African giants Orlando Pirates.
However, Chitembwe has able replacements in players such as Washington Pakamisa and Clive Kawinga and has already hinted that he might give the striker a run today. Interestingly, Pakamisa was on target in the reverse tie at National Sports Stadium together with David Rediyoni when Makepekepe, then under Moses “Bambo” Chunga, failed to collect maximum points.
Chitembwe said he expected an open match.
“Our chances are good as theirs. We are hopeful that it would work out for us. I have a very positive strong team, which keeps on improving and is doing what the coaches want.
“I am sure the players are ambitious to win the game and have the right spirit to win the game,” said Chitembwe.
Chitembwe began his coaching career in Zvishavane with Shabanie when it was in Southern Region Division One league.
The gaffer believes the Premiership break might prove a blessing in disguise, as the team had more time training together. FC Platinum’s last victory came at the end of July when they beat Hwange 2-0.
Before the break, they settled for 1-1 draw with visiting Chicken Inn and today Platinum mentor Rahman Gumbo is aware that his team just needs nothing short of a victory.
