8, 2012 at both cinemas will see the red carpet being rolled out for guests and VIPs as well as lots of fabulous prizes up for grabs.
In line with the opening night’s theme “007”, guests and VIPs have to don tuxedos like James Bond while the women have to dress up in sexy outfits like the Bond girls. Whoever dresses like James Bond or Bond girl will be up for special prizes including hampers, movie tickets and clothing vouchers. There will also be under-the-chair prizes in the movie house.
Grace Mutongerwa, the marketing co-ordinator for Ster Kinekor, promised movie lovers a night of fun, pomp and zest during the opening show.
“This is a first in Zimbabwe that we are bringing in the 3D (three-dimension) experience to cinemas. This means that we have gone digital in the sense that we have done away with the 35mm reels for our films and we are now moving ahead with the technology.
“The advantages of going digital are more than one. It means we have improved on sound and picture quality. We have also refurbished our cinemas to provide that ‘feels good and warmly atmosphere’ with new carpet walls.
“We have put the VIP seats and the much talked about love nests where there are no barriers for couples,” she said.
Those who buy the VIP tickets will be given a complimentary drink or snack while those in the love nests area get to enjoy chocolates courtesy of Ster Kinekor.
A majority of films for children will be animation and parents who do not want to shop in town without being bothered by their children can pass by the cinemas and drop them for a movie or two. In the cinemas children will be served with cereals, milk and popcorn.
Asked if the cinemas would be thronged by people as in the past, Mutongerwa said they had done everything right to ensure that the cinemas were comfy and homely.
“We are fully aware that not many people enjoy watching movies at home and so we have improved on the services including new toilets, seats and the lights to give that cinema feel.
“However, there is a great difference between home entertainment and cinema especially now that we have quality sound and picture.
“The other reason people should throng our movie houses is that we are now screening all the latest movies as soon as they get released in the United States or the United Kingdom,” she said.
Asked how they will fare in view of the high level of piracy in the country where a pirated DVD costs a dollar, Mutongerwa said they were targeting a different market and audiences.
“We are not worried about home entertainment but instead we are targeting those people who love to enjoy the big screen magic and who love the ambience in cinemas.
“The pirated copies do not have the quality that we are hoping to provide and that alone makes us a cut above the rest,” she said.
It is hoped that the new Ster Kinekor will screen latest movies such as “Skyfall”, a spy thriller and “Taken 2” among others, which are currently big on the international circuit.
