KWEKWE Polytechnic College has taken pride in training more female students than males in life skills programmes.

Addressing graduands and guests during the Kwekwe Polytechnic Small and Medium Enterprises graduation on Saturday, the Principal Engineer, Evans Musara, said they were proud of the college’s ability to produce an impressive number of female graduates.

“The gender ration aforementioned cannot go unnoticed.

“It is quite evident and impressive that we have enrolled and trained more females than males in life skills.

“In fact, 89 percent of today’s graduands, we are celebrating, are females,” said Engineer Musara.

Female graduands were 1 092 compared to 133 males.

Engineer Musara reiterated the importance of women taking the lead in empowerment programmes as the country works towards achieving gender parity.

“Recent population census data released by ZIMSTATS showed that females constitute about 52 percent of Zimbabwe’s total population.

“This implies that women should be seen to be dominating all spheres of our life, be it education, employment, business opportunities and in leadership.

“With 89 percent of our graduands being females, it shows that we are in the right direction towards achieving gender parity.

“In fact, they say ‘if you have educated the woman, you have educated the whole nation’ so, in essence, we do better for ourselves if we educate and train more women as they have the propensity to make a positive conducive environment for socio-economic development and make the world a better place,” he said.

The graduands were certified in Traditional Apprenticeship (TAP) and Integrated Skills Outreach Programme (ISOP) Courses, which include Art and Design, Automobile Electrics and Nurse Aide, among others.c
