adminLONDON — Sir Alex Ferguson is in the running to replace Scotland manager Gordon Strachan if he steps down, according to bookmakers. Scotland failed to qualify for Euro 2016 last week and the boss has come under pressure as a result.
While he has said he will take time to decide on what appears to be an uncertain future, some reports suggest Strachan is keen to stay in the job.
But that hasn’t stopped bookies speculating as to who might replace him should he go. Manchester United legend Ferguson is the 14/1 sixth favourite with Bet Victor. The favourite is Joe Jordan (4/1), closely followed by Graeme Souness and Paul Lambert (both 6/1).
Alan Irvine and Steve Clarke are priced at 8/1, ahead of David Moyes (10/1) and Alex McLeish and Gary McAllister (both 12/1).
Then comes Ferguson, whose return would be one of the biggest shocks in world football.
The legendary Scot (73) stepped down as United boss in 2013 after 27 trophy-filled years at the club.
He won the Premier League title no fewer than 13 times, the FA Cup on five occasions and the Champions League twice. Although others might be ahead of him in the running for the top job in Scotland, a return to management for the man considered to be the best ever is not out of the question.
Ferguson is said to be a more likely candidate than the likes of Kenny Dalglish (16/1) and Alex Neil (25/1). — The Daily Express
