Man kills self over $100

A 60-year-old Hwedza man on Tuesday committed suicide by drinking an unknown pesticide after spending $100 from the $300 he was given by his grandmother to pay for tillage. Mashonaland East Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the incident.

He said James Bhero from Dendende Village under Chief Svosve, died on admission at Mount St Marys Hospital. It is alleged that on October 1 the man was given $300 for tillage by his grandmother identified as Rosemary Phiri.

It is reported that after receiving the money, Bhero proceeded to Zaire Business Centre where he spent the whole night drinking beer. It is believed Bhero spent about $100 from the $300.

Bhero, it is alleged returned home drunk the following morning and told a neighbour identified as Wellington Tsomba about the incident.

After that Bhero proceeded to his bedroom where he drank unknown pesticide. Tsomba followed Bhero in his room and found him lying on the ground in agony.
