Festival culture is back: Yasin

ORGANISERS of the just ended “Jazz & Soul of Zim Musical Festival” held at Sherwood Golf Club believe patrons deserve quality entertainment after paying to attend.

A festival coordinator, who has been working with the majority of jazz and soul artists, believes music lovers deserve value for their money.

“When we started this festival, which coincided with the Africa Day celebrations, making it four days of non-stop music, spoken word, contemporary dance and trading of arts and crafts, we had everyone in mind.

“At first, the idea was to thank most regulars who perform here like Mbeu, Victor Kunonga, Diana Samkange, Andy Muridzo and Vee Mhofu, among others.

“Now that the first edition went according to plan, we have since started preparing for next year’s event. It is our hope that we meet the levels set by people who used to host big festivals like HIFA, Intswasa in Bulawayo, and Chimanimani Festivals, among others,” he said.

To ensure that all age groups were catered for, Yasin vowed to put up more children’s play areas at the venue.

“Festivals should also be used to cater for children so that we catch them young. We need to instil in them the culture of festivals, which is common in other regional countries.”

Meanwhile, South Africa-based crooner, Louis Mhlanga was last night billed to bring the curtain down on the festival.

A Zimbabwean by birth, Mhlanga has settled well across the Limpopo where he has performed at big festivals and produced a number of other artists’ music.

Over the years, he has attended nearly all high-profile jazz festivals, which used to light up Harare in yesteryear.
