Masvingo mayor Councillor Hubert Fidze’s bid to resurrect his waning political career took a severe knock once again after he lost in the shambolic MDC-T faction primary elections to choose the party’s candidate for the Masvingo Urban National Assembly seat over the weekend.
MDC-T was forced to conduct a rerun of the primaries to choose its candidate for Masvingo Urban after businessman and national executive member Mr Takanayi Mureyi, who had initially sailed through unopposed, stepped down under controversial circumstances.
Clr Fidze, who had earlier been drubbed in party primaries for Ward 6, which virtually ended his interest in the top job at Town House, lost the race for the Masvingo Urban seat to Mr Jacob Nyokanhete, who is an accountant with the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council.
Mr Nyokanhete brew a shocker after romping to victory after defeating Clr Fidze and five other aspiring candidates in a poll characterised by chaos. He garnered 399 votes to win the right to represent his party in the race for Masvingo Urban seat.
Masvingo city council fireman, Mr Bonface Mazarire came second with 394 votes followed by the party’s district chair for Masvingo Urban Mr Muranganwa Chanyau with 291 votes.
Clr Fidze was fourth with 287 votes, while prominent city lawyer Mr Derick Charamba got a paltry 31 votes.
Another aspiring candidate only identified as Mr Wakura settled for the wooden spoon after garnering seven votes.
