Fifa to assess Zifa finances

This was confirmed by Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze.

He said the meeting with the local football leadership will give the international soccer motherbody an insight into how bad the finances of the local football body are.

Zifa have in the past two years been bailed out a number of times by Zifa president Cuthbert Dube.

Last year they sent an SOS to Fifa asking for funds to help keep the local game afloat.

The two financial experts, Rolf Eggenberger from Switzerland and Fidelis Banda of Zambia, are expected to meet Zifa officials.

Mashingaidze said the duo will meet the Zifa presidium consisting of Dube and his deputy Ndumiso Gumede and board member finance Elliot Kasu.

Mashingaidze and the association’s finance manager Benjamin Dewa will also attend the meetings.

“This meeting follows previous requests to Fifa for help. We have indicated to Fifa that we inherited a broke association and the situation has not improved. We are confident that with their backing we could improve our position and start getting things going well for Zimbabwean football.

“These gentlemen are experts in finance. We want them to go through our books so that they have an appreciation of our position. They will do their own assessments apart from meeting us,” said Mashingaidze.
Mashingaidze said the Fifa team will help Zifa map the way forward.

“We want them to make recommendations to Fifa so that we get funding,” said Mashingaidze.
Years of mismanagement and failure to attract sponsorship have seen the national association struggle with finances.

Zifa hope that once the Asiagate probe is finalised they will open a new chapter for the local game which hopefully will attract meaningful sponsorship.
