Thousands of Zimbabweans have converged in Mvurwi for the Munhumutapa Day commemorations, a colourful national celebration that coincides with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s birthday.
With more than 100 000 people expected to attend, Mvurwi has come alive with music, celebrations and a strong display of national pride.
This year’s celebrations are particularly significant as Munhumutapa Day is being observed for the first time as a national public holiday, following the publication of Statutory Instrument 148 of 2026 under the Public Holidays and Prohibition of Business Act (Chapter 10:21).

Thousands make their way to Mvurwi Town Centre
Thousands of people, mainly youths from across the country, are making their way into Mvurwi Town Centre in Mvurwi, Mashonaland Central, for the Munhumutapa Day commemorations.
Today’s celebrations coincide with President Mnangagwa’s 84th birthday festivities, turning Mvurwi into a hive of activity as thousands prepare to welcome him.
In an interview yesterday, Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Christopher Magomo said the province was ready to host more than 100 000 people for the dual commemorations.
“We are happy and grateful to host this important day. We are celebrating the President’s life and achievements and what he has done to take this nation to higher levels,” he said.
Minister Magomo said all logistical arrangements, including venues, security, water, sanitation and transport, had been finalised ahead of the event.
Senior officials arrive
Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Politburo and Central Committee members, Zanu PF officials, Chiefs, Members of Parliament and senior Government officials have arrived at Mvurwi Town Centre for the Munhumutapa Day celebrations.
They join thousands of citizens who have already entered the venue, with thousands more still in queues making their way in.
Delegates are currently being entertained by various groups while they await the arrival of the President.
