Fight against HIV, drug abuse intensified in Kariba

THE National Aids Council (NAC) has taken the fight against new infections of HIV in juveniles in the resort town of Kariba amid revelations that many, particularly boys below the age of 16, were now exposed to the virus.

The young boys who double as learners at school and part-time workers at Kapenta harbours have become prey to drug lords and seasoned sex workers.

With the sprouting of shebeens in the Mahombekombe high-density suburb, many youngsters have been left at the mercy of drug peddlers and prostitutes who prey on their little hard-earned money.

In an effort to plug new infections, NAC through volunteers has introduced a male engagement model led by Behaviour Change Male Motivators (BCMM).

The target is to inform Kariba males from the age of 10 upwards, of the dangers of reckless behaviours.

Ms Asmin Chikukwa and Mr Joshua Mukwesha the BCMM from Kariba’s Wards 6 and 4, are taking the exposed juveniles through life-changing lessons.

The two told journalists yesterday that risk behaviours as a result of changed lifestyles due to a few dollars earned were threatening young lives.

The province is expected to host provincial belated World Aids Day (WAD) commemorations in Makate, Kariba rural on December, 14.
