A FIGHT over gold ore between two gold miners at Wonderer Mine in Shurugwi ended in tragedy after one of them plunged headlong into a disused mine shaft leading to his death.

This was heard last Friday during the initial court appearance of Talent Bwerinofa (23) of Kanengoni Village under Chief Nhema in Shurugwi.

He appeared before Shurugwi resident magistrate Mr Tavengwa Sangster facing a count of murder.

Bwerinofa stands accused of allegedly causing the unfortunate death of fellow gold miner Mr Hardlife Javangwe.

Bwerinofa was not asked to plead and was remanded to May 23 in custody.

Mr Sangster advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecutor Ms Bertha Bore told the court that on May 8, Bwerinofa allegedly had an altercation with Javangwe over some gold ore.

“The accused allegedly slapped Javangwe several times on the face accusing him of stealing his gold ore. The accused person then took a chisel intending to strike the deceased but was disarmed by other colleagues,” said Ms Bore.

She said Javangwe allegedly fled from the scene but with Bwerinofa in hot pursue.

“The accused then allegedly picked up some stones which he threw at the deceased. While being pursued Javangwe failed to negotiated his way and plunged headlong into an isolated mine shaft and died instantly,” said Ms Bore.

She said efforts by fellow gold miners to resuscitate Javangwe were fruitless, adding that the matter was reported to the police leading to Bwerinofa’s arrest.

In an unrelated incident, a 34-year-old passenger was crushed to death by a truck after he was allegedly pushed in the trucks direction by some touts after he refused to board their commuter omnibus.
