A fight over stray cattle ended tragically in Mutasa after a 10-year-old boy who was herding cattle was fatally struck with an iron peg by a 15-year-old boy.

The incident happened in Muponda Village under Chief Mutasa’s area where the accused (name withheld) allegedly fatally struck the 10-year-old as he accused him of leaving the cattle he was herding to graze in his family’s fields.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident and said investigations are in progress.

“The accused and the now deceased were herding cattle in a grazing area. The victim and his brother (12) went home with their herd of cattle. However, the accused followed them home and reprimanded the now deceased for leaving the cattle he was herding to graze in the fields.

“The accused uprooted an iron peg which was near the gate and struck the deceased once on the head. The victim bled profusely and died instantly,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

The accused was arrested but since he is a minor, he was released into the custody of his parents as he awaits court appearance.
