CONSTRUCTION of the Kwekwe-Nkayi-Lupane Road, popularly known as the “Fighting Road”, is progressing, with surfacing works now underway, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has said.
The long-awaited highway, which links Matabeleland North and Midlands provinces, is expected to reduce the distance between Harare and Victoria Falls by nearly 200 kilometres when completed.
Two contractors are currently working on the strategic highway, which is being developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Government and local contractor Road Trekkers.
“The Kwekwe-Nkayi-Lupane Road construction project is taking shape, with surfacing works now underway. From construction to connectivity, Zimbabwe is moving kilometre by kilometre. We are building the road to progress,” said the ministry.
The project is expected to improve the movement of goods and people, enhance regional connectivity and unlock economic opportunities along the corridor.
Popularly known as the “Fighting Road” by communities in Lupane and surrounding areas because of decades-long calls for its construction, the highway is one of several major infrastructure projects underway in Matabeleland North.
