AFTER a remarkable 27-year journey in the film industry, award-winning veteran filmmaker and director Itayi Kakuwo, affectionately known as Mugomba, says he has no intention of retiring any time soon.

Kakuwo’s path led him from Kadoma to Harare in 1994, where he embarked on his cinematic adventure with the drama Garikai, which graced the ZBC TV screens.

“Upon my arrival in Harare, I was eager to explore my passion for storytelling.

“In that year, I began learning the craft of writing dramas and soon became a cameraman.”

His journey took a decisive turn in 1998 when he stepped into the role of director, guided by industry luminaries such as Rhemias Musasa of ZBC TV, the late Arnold Shoko, the late King Dube, and Dorothy Chidzawo, who all played a significant role in shaping his career.

“Since then, I have ventured into numerous projects, many of which have blended into a tapestry of memories from my creative journey.

“I am proud to be a NAMA award-winning director,” he said.

Kakuwo’s illustrious work includes a number of dramas and films which he has written, produced, and directed.

Titles such as Chitsidzo, Checkmate, Munombodei, Fools Day, Maimbodei, Nzungu Muriva, God Given Job, The Trap, Mawoko Matema, Gamuchirai, The Caretaker, My Love, My Second Wife, Runako, Justice, and Confession bear testament to his artistic vision and dedication.

“I wrote Chitsidzo in 2000, featuring talented actors such as Arineshto and Mai Meki, who later became a household name, earning the affectionate title Mai Jilimba in the Mawoko Matema series.

“Since then, my passion for directing has only intensified, as I have been sought after by various people to help them craft and direct dramas.”

Kakuwo has travelled to neighbouring countries such as South Africa, Malawi, Namibia, Mozambique and Botswana, which has allowed him to connect with fellow Zimbabwean filmmakers and witness their success.

“It was inspiring to see how well they were doing.

“Zimbabwe is rich in talent but it desperately requires backing.

“My vision as a filmmaker is to employ, educate, and entertain. The greatest challenge in realising this vision remains securing funding and sponsorship. The film industry demands substantial investment to produce high-quality projects.

“However, local TV stations often sidestep independent producers, opting instead for in-house content, which leaves many of us stranded.”

He expressed concern over the reliance on foreign content.

“They prioritise airing donated programmes from abroad, sidelining local creators.

“We also require royalties for our projects.  We continue to suffer from repeated broadcasts, rather than purchasing new content, stations are recycling our work without any compensation, despite underpaying us for our efforts.”

Despite these formidable challenges, Kakuwo hailed the Government, led by President Mnangagwa, for implementing policies aimed at empowering artists, such as the recent launch of a National Youth Employment Strategy designed to provide young people with access to skills development, entrepreneurship, and vocational training.

“Had it not been for COVID-19, I would have produced a blockbuster movie.

“I had everything planned, with my budget outlined and my cast and crew ready for greatness.

“We aimed for a Netflix premiere, as Zimbabwe possesses the talent and stories to captivate global audiences.

“However, Netflix’s requirement for specific equipment, like RED cameras, which are beyond our financial reach, has hindered our progress.

“Truly, I will not retire until I complete my three upcoming films. And I aspire to be the first director to employ TRABABLAS technology in my next blockbuster.”

With unwavering determination, Kakuwo continues to dream big and inspire future generations of filmmakers.
